In regard to such lack of licensing, several people recently asked me during my trip to Texas what the cost of “no licensing” would be? With no auctioneer licensing anywhere in the United States, I would conclude the biggest cost would be a lack of education — because when it’s not required, it’s often avoided.
Of course, there are indeed some states which license auctioneers (including my home state of Ohio) which require pre-license education but do not require any continuing education. A study completed by The Ohio State University and myself in 2015 concluded that continuing education was needed in Ohio, but Ohio still refuses to implement any requirements.

It is abundantly clear to anyone paying attention that mandatory pre-license and continuing education ensures auctioneers learn and keep learning, and optional (and thus often evaded) pre-license and/or continuing education contributes to a lack of learning. With no required auctioneer license, we have far less educated auctioneers.
If auctioneer licensing was eliminated in all states (nationwide) there would be other costs, but none so severe as a lack of mandated education. However, for the most part, the other merits of licensing merely protect those already in business by creating a barrier to entry — or at least that’s what some states are claiming, and if there were no licenses, reciprocity would be irrelevant.
Further, as a result of less mandated education, state and national auctioneer associations would suffer, membership and attendance would wane, and valuable networking and industry relationships would be impacted. I would hold that reasonably restrained licensing for auctioneers is prudent with a reasonable amount of continuing education mandated each renewal period.

Mike. The key words here are reasonably mandated. The word reasonably doesn’t doesn’t work with governmental agencies state or federal. (yes I wrote doesn’t twice)because that’s how the government works if one doesn’t would work they would want two doesn’ts and then three doesn’t and so forth.I know Mike I’m a radical Republican and don’t trust the government but my non trust comes from experience.such as Obama care my monthly premiums went up 400 dollars more above what I was paying at the start and now 600 a month more this year and in the beginning had a dozen carriers to choose from and now only one take it or leave it tried to get carriers not in Obama plan but they won’t write individual plans such as blue cross, Aetna so my monthly premium1500 month for me and my wife so my thoughts are it’s self regulating if you are in the auction business and don’t know the law or how to run a auction or do payroll or any other aspects of the business then it won’t be long before your out of the business and you will be looking for a new job or you will educate yourself on what your lacking in my area the city government wanted all auctions to finger print any person selling at auction so we would meet a 80 year old person at there home to talk to them about the auction way of selling and they agree and then we would need to say good give me your finger we have to finger print you( like your a criminal )that’s what the city requires we auction company s and the used dealers got this struck from becoming law so Mike less government way better for auction business if I was the instructor that all the auctioneers had to pay to get that continues education then we’ll maaayyybbee I would agree oh he’ll even if the money was coming all to me no way less government in the auction business the better.
